Broken Wings is a new ballet created for the English National Ballet Company and premiered as a part of the tripple bill She Said. The piece follows the life, love and art of the iconic Mexican painter Frida Kahlo. The light design connected the re-introduction of colour to the stage image with Frida's discovery of painting and her journey of self-expression as an antidote to her restricted mobility and contstant physical pain.
"Much of the work is set against a black cloth which parts a few feet to reveal first a bright orange glow against which Frida’s artistry flowers, then a yellow glow as life begins to overwhelm then a red glow as she is overtaken by the events that eventually lead to her demise." Seeing Dance
"Really rather special... a beautiful and poignant spectacle" The Daily Telegraph****
"A marvellous image of creativity and power" The Independent****
"Lopez Ochoa and her designers bring that art to fantastical life, as Kahlo dances with a chorus of brilliantly outfitted monkeys, flowers and birds of paradise." The Guardian****
