Leonore’s Fidelio explores the theme of freedom in contemporary times. Performed and created on location at the former correctional facility de Noordsingel, the performance allows the public a look behind the closed doors of the prison, giving them a very personal experience of the idea of freedom, captivity and sacrifice. The light design was inspired by the location and how it was used in the performance. The light design made use of specific frequencies to make the spaces seem smaller and induce a feeling of claustrophobia in the public and to distort their perception of time, to create physiological experiences commonly associated with incarceration.
